Safe Disposal Programme of Medicines: Plesem
From the year 2011 PLESEM begins to work, the Programme for Medicines Packaging Waste Disposal, the first specific programme for a productive sector.
With the support of the Centro de Farmacias del Uruguay (Pharmacies Association) there were placed containers called ECOFARMA at participating pharmacies.
To ensure proper environmental management, in ECOFARMA recipients consumers may waste: medicines that are expired or that are not needed anymore, medicine packages, empty or leftover.
PLESEM is the Safe Disposal Programme of Medicines Packaging Waste, discarded by end users, implemented by pharmaceutical laboratories affiliated to the Association of National Laboratories - to which Gramón Bagó is part - and the Chamber for Pharmaceutical Specialties of Uruguay (A.L.N. and C.E.F.A. respectively).
PLESEM meets all requirements established by Decree 260/007 concerning management of packaging waste.
Pharmaceutical associations have entrusted the management policy and all operational programme to PLATERAN S.A. ( FARMARED - LOGIRED ), company which has initial Environmental Authorization granted by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs. In its place, the initial classification of packaging waste is carried out, sorting each type of waste to those destinations that are authorized by the National Direction of Environment (DINAMA) to ensure recovery or safe disposal.
For its implementation the Center of Pharmacies of Uruguay (CFU - Centro de Farmacias del Uruguay) supported the programme, authorizing the placing of ECOFARMA containers at participating pharmacies.
