Regulator of the sleep-wake cycle: Modulan®
Modulan ® is a regulator of the sleep-wake cycle. This hormone, which is synthesized from tryptophan, is involved in synchronizing circadian rhythms with the light-dark cycle.
Its concentration increases at dusk, decreasing until it reaches its minimum expression at dawn.
It exerts its action by binding to two main types of receptors MT1 and
MT2. A third receptor (MT3) has been identified, the function and relevance of which is not yet well known. Modulan ® has a hypnotic/sedative effect and increases the propensity to sleep.
Modulan ® It is almost completely absorbed. The plasma peak is obtained 50 minutes after administration. A 3 mg dose increases the endogenous plasma concentration of melatonin 60-fold. It has been shown that decreases in plasma melatonin levels have repercussions at the metabolic level.
Thus, this hormone is related to the regulation of body mass, digestive efficiency, and metabolic rate.
The inhibition of melatonin can lead to a series of metabolic disorders, leading, for example, to the appearance of obesity, type II diabetes, coronary heart disease, etc.
