October, the month of Breast Cancer Prevention
In Uruguay, 1 in 10 women may develop breast cancer throughout their lives, being the more common cancer among them.
Each day, approximately 5 Uruguayan women are diagnosed with breast cancer.
Studies that were conducted in our country show that since the mid-1990s, slowly but steadily, mortality has been declining because of this. This situation is positively valued by the scientific community who explains it as a consequence the progress made in the timely diagnosis and in the new treatments. (Honorary Commission for the Fight against Cancer )
In Gramón Bagó de Uruguay we are strongly committed to the prevention of prevalent diseases. In accordance with this premise, for the second consecutive year we implemented an awareness campaign against breast cancer.
On October 17th. and 20th., Dr. Álvaro Huarte and Dr. Mariana Díaz conducted workshops aimed at all our staff. The matters discussed were: risk factors, prevention measures and group analysis of clinical cases. The dynamics not only allowed the full understanding of the possible causes and effects of the disease, but also sensitized positively for the adoption of preventive behaviours. On the other hand, the active participation of all attendees generated a pleasant and relaxed experience. At the end, we adhered to the proposal of the Honorary Commission for the Fight against Cancer and it was delivered to the assistants a graphic material to write a prevention message and to be published in the Facebook page created by this organization.
On October 19th., in commemoration of World Breast Cancer Day, we invited our staff with a Healthy Snack composed of fresh, dry fruits and cereals. It was accompanied by a card to record the periodic completion of routine exams and a reminder of the three basic pillars for prevention:
- Healthy nutrition
- Medical control
- Physical exercise
We also proposed the use of the pink ribbon in the week from October 17th. to 23rd on our clothing, as a symbol of commitment and we also added it to the electronic signature of each of us, as a way to promote awareness among our contacts.
